Illustrated Discussion, this should include your possible approaches- .you want to explore and examples of work on the photographers within the paper

Image Bank - complete with 30 images you can use this to record pictures that inspire you or that you want to use the ideas  ...............

Research Log - completed with at least fifteen – twenty entries and annotations….. discuss why the images were selected and how they are relevant to your response to the externally set exam  ( 5 should be non American or European) ( remember connotation, denotation and context)

Mood and Atmosphere

Mood and atmosphere is to create dramatic and provoking photographs, experimenting with lighting, location and setting. Arranging props and models will generate the general aura of the photo.

The reason Mood and Atmosphere could be a strong subject to do for me is because nudity is an intimate topic. Mostly, it represents some type of meaning; vulnerability , innocence, love, confidence. Though these are all feelings, they are also moods. It depends on how I want the observer to feel. What I want them to take away from my photograph. Is the atmosphere dangerous, does it the anonymous persons body scream anything. What aura can you gather?
I researched some ways on how to create mood in a photo. I found a website that helped me in thinking of ideas greatly. http://www.lightstalking.com/a-guide-to-creating-mood-in-your-images/

'The dictionary defines it as “Inducing or suggestive of a particular feeling or state of mind” which would suggest that a moody photo is one that creates a feeling in the viewer.
Key Words:

  1. Setting the place or type of surroundings where something is positioned or where an event takes place.
  2. Location- a particular place or position.
  3. Props - is an object used on stage or on screen by actors during a performance or screen production. In practical terms, a prop is considered to be anything movable or portable on a stage or a set, distinct from the actors, scenery, costumes and electrical equipment.
  4. Lighting -the arrangement or effect of lights.
  5. Models - A person or object that poses/ imitates a action or request fro a camera or audience.
  6. Dramatic images -used to explore abstract concepts such as relationships and emotions, as well as realistic situations.
  7. Thought-povoking Images -Take us deep emotional journeys causing feeling ranging from uplifting joy to overwhelming sadness.

Lucinda Chau:

An example photographer is Lucinda ChuaAs a creative consultant at The Future Laboratory, Lucinda brings the work of the Consultancy division to life across a range of platforms – from film and photography to music and experience. She has delivered projects for brands including Pernod Ricard, Sony and L’Oréal.
Like her role at The Future Laboratory, Lucinda’s background is creative and dynamic. After graduating with a degree in photography from Nottingham Trent University in 2007, Lucinda worked as a creative practitioner for a range of clients including the BBC, Channel 4 and Wallpaper* magazine, and she also received Arts Council England funding to exhibit and undertake artist residencies abroad. Outside of The Future Laboratory, you’ll find Lucinda writing and recording music in her little home studio in east London.
Here are some of her works:
Edward Steichen.

Steichen was the most frequently featured photographer in Alfred Stieglitz' groundbreaking magazine Camera Work during its run from 1903 to 1917. Together Stieglitz and Steichen opened the Little Galleries of the Photo-Secession, which eventually became known as 291 after its address.
His photos of gowns for the magazine Art et Décoration in 1911 are regarded as the first modern fashion photographs ever published. From 1923 to 1938, Steichen was a photographer for the Condé Nast magazines Vogue and Vanity Fair while also working for many advertising agencies including J. Walter Thompson. During these years, Steichen was regarded as the best known and highest paid photographer in the world. In 1944, he directed the war documentary The Fighting Lady, which won the 1945 Academy Award for Best Documentary.
After World War II, Steichen was Director of the Department of Photography at New York's Museum of Modern Art until 1962. While at MoMA, he curated and assembled the exhibit The Family of Man, which was seen by nine million people.

Shoot 9 Laughter Work Records

10/03/2016

Plans

In this shoot ( Laughter) I am planning on shooting my model to be laughing naturally. I don't want to pose it too much, rather more fly on the wall photographs. I would like to use different locations but not too varied.
I plan to have photos of her mid dancing and laughing/being silly. Natural things that people do whilst 'nobody is watching'.

What I hope to achieve:

I hope to achieve 5 different photographs that really scream Happiness and Laughter. It'd be nice to get ones that look very natural.

What I actually achieved:

In shoot 2 I decided on doing the theme of Laughter. I chose this as it is a well suited one from shoot 1. I think Laughter comes from the person rather than the lighting. I can come from props too.
I mostly used just the girl to pose and make her laugh rather than using lot of props. i did find it hard to make her laugh under pressure but luckily we had  good connection so the atmosphere was light making us both laugh either way.

Here is a photo I liked:

I really like this photo because of the way she has her eyes closed and her mouth forms a imperfect skill. It looks real and genuine (which it is). Her hair is slightly tussled signalising the movement of laughter. I edited the background to black and white so that her face is the main focus. This girl is clearly very beautiful, capturing your attentions straight away.

What I will do next time/Progression

However, I did not like this photo as much:
The reason i did not like this photo as much was because of the blurriness. It is out of focus and slightly over exposed. I also did not like the angle taken.

If I were to do this shoot again, I would experiment more with different settings, Lighting and props. I used a few props but I would like to use more especially ors that signify laughter. I would also like to experiment with another model to represent laughter within a friendship.

Next shoot I hope to be able use a wider range of angles and use different editing techniques.

Shoot 8 Longing Work Record

Plans
In this shoot I hope to achieve photos that demonstrate longing. I would like to use both models and objects in oder to do this. I will mostly like to edit in black and white, with some lighting and negative space. I think the negative space shows what you want, but can't have; if they can't se their way there, they cannot get there.

What I hope to achieve:

I hope to achieve a variety of objects and humans. I would like to get hat people count on, what emotions they display. I hope to be able to use a camera effect called Bokeh. This is where your subjects lights, but you defocus slightly creating circle around the light.

What I actually achieved
I managed to get some photos of inspirations from artist I researched, I also managed to get arrange and use the bokeh effect. I managed to get a few successful ones, and in my opinion one shat represent longing. However, some of ten you would only understand with explanations.

I really like this photo because of the way you cannot see the models facial features. You can see the silhouette of her facial features and body but here is no detail. The most clear bit is the mist and water on the glass door. The reason for this photograph was because to me,  the water represents thunderstorm. This thunderstorm is surrounding her, trapping her, blurring her vision. The model longs to be out of it, to have her vision back. The reason I used a black and white effect was so that it emphasises the storms grey clouds.

This photograph, may not look like it belongs in longing, however,  my  goal was to show how people do not like to stay in one place. The black poster is actually a map, with fairy lights around. The map represents how people long to travel the world. They do to want to stay in on place. They torture themselves by having it up on their walls. The lights  represent the way people wish to be in the spotlight, everybody wants to be noticed. I manipulated the colour of theslights by turning them blue as blue represents being down, in sense, when you long for something, you're sad; you're not happy with what you have.

What I will do next time/Progression

If I were to do this shoot again I would like to make the photos easier for people to recognise but again have an underlying meaning.

Shoot 7 Dismal Work Record

Plans
For this shoot I plan to demonstrate photographs with the element of sadness. The way I want to do this is have neutral faces mostly and let the viewer decide themselves on how the picture speaks to them. I would like to work with black and white, maybe selective colour.

What I hope to achieve:
I hope that I can achieve a wide range of photographs with different representations of sadness. If presented the opportunity I would like to show sadness with animate objects too. I aim to use a variety of models and use of different locations.

What I actually achieved
I managed to achieve a range of photographs, ranging the model also. I used black and white effects to emphasise the emotions of the person. I decided to play around with selective colour a little bit which enabled me to highlight certain aspects.

To take this photograph I had get the model to kneel down so i could capture  from a birds eye view, although it does look like its straight ahead. There is a slight tear coming from the corner o he eye, as tears are clear I could not selectively colour it, so I coloured the eye instead. Usually her res are a woods brown, however I changed them to a deep brown with speck of green and a blue light in the corner of her eye. The blue is a representative colour of being sad.

In this photograph, I had the model just look down and contemplate things. The reason i did this was  so that she looks dan but not necessarily crying. I think the range f typed of sanded I captured is good because all people express their sadness in different ways. Some cry, some do nothing, some leave everything behind.

What I will do next time/Progression
If I were to redo this shoot I would like to incorporate objects and props. I would also like to use different locations e.g. bedroom, outside ext.. Further more I would like to get a representation of different ages.

Shoot 7 dismal Straight Images

Shoot 6 Tense Straight Images

Shoot 6 Tense Work Record

Plans
In this shoot I hope to take some photographs that represent Tense. in order to do this I will use models verbally and physically fighting. I think a good way to represent it would be to have slight shadowing and movement in the photographs. I also intend on editing them into black and white to emphasise the tenseness.

What I hope to achieve:
I hope to achieve a selection of photos with different lighting and movement present. I hope to get a real life representation of arguing, As I am using my friend It may be difficult as for a staged argument, it becomes hard not to laugh.
What I actually achieved
I managed to achieve a section of photographs exploring the topic of Tense. Within the photographs I tried to vary the type of arguing, levels of aggression ad staging. I have a few in different places. I managed to edit the in black and white, and achieve the movement pictures.
I like this photograph because of the way you can see pure emotions of their fees. Truth to be told, the girls were singing along to songs aggressively rather than shouting and making the actual atmosphere a horrid one. I used flash on this photograph so that you can see slight shadowing on the walls and around their silhouettes. The reason I did this was because it adds to the aura of not really wanting to watch what something will evolve to.
This photograph, I tried to capture slight movement which worked for me. I did not have a tripod present, so I let the camera rest on an arm rest whilst i put the shutter speed up to about 2 seconds. This photo is blurry and very chaotic, adding to the tenseness. It is one girl going to punch the other girl, who is cowered in the corner. I like the way this can represent many different things. To me I see my friends messing around, however, another person, who does not know the secrets of the photograph could see two girls fighting, inflicting pain over each other.

What I will do next time/Progression
If I were to redo this shoot, I would like to experiment with different locations and models. I would also have the lighting a lot dimmer and hopefully have the right equipment I needed.

For my next shoot, I would like to use close up shots and capture emotions either they are physically seen or manipulated in.

Shoot 5 Relationship Work Record

Plans
For this shoot I plan to capture images in the same way I did for Friendships. I would like to use objects more so than humans. If I can I would lie to show the playful and romantic side of relationships. If shooting any humans I would most likely use my brother ad his girlfriend.

What I hope to achieve:
I hope to achieve photographs that show playfulness, It should most ideally be colourful and make someone mile. I would also like to represent relationships through everyday life. How? i'm not quite sure of that yet.
What I actually achieved
I managed to achieve photographs that display every day life and playfulness. I liked the way I was able to use objects such as coats, mugs, hones and manipulate my models to cover their faces. I ale achieved a classically cliche photograph of hand holding. They are all colourful and do not explore the breakdown concept of a relationship.
This photo represents a relationship of two people, but it also represents the way in which genders are stereotyped. The  girl is holding pup an enoki of a love struck face. It is normal now that girls are sexualised by everybody, and the boy is holding an emoji of  faeces. The representation of that is that men are stereotyped to be heartbreaks, to be horrible people, people who do not give a ****.  It also however, can show the playfulness of a relationship. I like the way that It shows not everything is serious and romanic all the time.

This photo was a photo showing relationships through everyday use. We use mugs everyday, or mostly everyday. The cups have stereotypical phrases 'mooring gorgeous' and 'morning handsome'. This represents a man and woman in a relationship. I like the way that it isn't the direct thing i the photograph/ There is things happening around.

What I will do next time/Progression

If I were to shoot this again, I think I would like to explore same sex relationships and the stereotypes/ difficulty of the, but at the same time, the fun. The way they are normal, just like a straight relationship. I would also like to explore the breakdowns of relationships.

For my next shoot, I would like to experiment with using different locations and lighting.

Shoot 4 friendship Work Record

05/03/2016

Plans

For shoot 4 I will aim to photograph under the topic of Friendship. in this shoot I would like to experiment with different takes on friendship. Not necessarily just human but objects too. i would like to see what I can do more with objects.

What I hope to achieve:
I hope to achieve photos using objects that show a good representation of friendship. I would like to also show the difference, ad how all people are different. I think the way I will edit these photos will mostly be bright and happy. With colours and focus. I would also like to try one or two photos in black and white in order to represent dark and happy times. the way in which I will do thesis acing the darker greyscale to be negative and the lighter greyscale to be positive.

What I actually achieved

I found that It was hard to use objects that represent friendship, however I did produce some that i really liked. I managed to use a black and white photo, along with photos full of colour and focus. I didn't however produce that many photographs on the topic. Here are some of the photos:

I really like this photograph as I think it represents a flock of  friends. I used the butterfly mirror sticker up on my wall. I liked the way that one is mainly in focus d there are followers around. I think it is a good way to represent friendship, sometimes there aren't two or three or four all together. Sometimes you are solo ad the surrounding friends are just friend, they're not your family. However, with this message I guess you would expect that the picture should be black and white, morbid; but I disagree. Some people are perfectly happy with having lots of friends and no main person. it is not necessarily a bd thing. The fact that this butterfly is happy, is the reason for the light exposure and bright pastel  colours.
Again, I was very happy with this photograph. I especially like the way i have cited it. There is lots of negative specks on the dyes of the teddy gears. I like the way that the teddies are very different from each other but still ooh happy. I think it shows individuality very well; the way two people can be completely different but be best friends. I laos like the way it shows childhood innocence with the teddies and how children do not jude from others outside appearances.

What I will do next time/Progression
If I were to redo this shoot  I would like to explore a little more on the heartbreak of friendship, and how the closest person to you can tear you apart. I think that even though it is a sad concept it is beautiful to capture in a photograph.

For my next shoot I would like to explore the same concepts but in a relationship rather than friendships. I think I would like to experiment with objects again.

Shoot 3 Chaos Work Record

Plans

For this shoot I am hoping to be able to achieve a variety of different images. I would like to capture images on the theme of chaos. I think it would be cool to demonstrate how chaos can be inside a person, around a person or in both the outside and in.

What I hope to achieve

I hope to achieve a variety of shots, I would like to only use a model, not objects. I am hoping to be able to get messy backgrounds and have the model looking distressed. IF I can, I would like to edit the photos to make them even or chaotic. To do this I plan to shake the image or liquefy the backgrounds, possibly illuminate areas.

What I actually achieved
In this shoot, I managed to achieve a range of photographs and managed to photograph in a messy background. It was a lot easier than I thought it may be. I also managed to edit photos using the liquify tool and filter gallery ripples to make a photo look shaken.

This was a photo of a model putting washing away. The reason I chose to edit this photograph was because to me doing said normal chores can be chaotic. If you have so much to do, but such little time. I used the liquefy tool on photoshop to smudge the background. The reason for doing this was because it mad everything on the outside world seem a little more hazy. She is clear, in an okay place right now, but once she looks around, it'll be like she is spinning.

For this photograph, I captured the model fisting her hair. This is a sign of frustration; an emotion you will commonly feel when your whole world is a little chaotic. I turned the image to a blue using the colourising tool. The reason I did this was because blue is a representation of sadness; 'feeling a little blue'. I also used a filter gallery effect called Ripple. This changed the photograph to have a lake effect, or as I see it, grainy/shake effect. I done this because it is bazaar to look at. There are so many different pixels that it makes thee photograph itself a bit chaotic.

What I will do next/progression

If I were to shoot this again, I think I would like to capture to angry side of Chaos. When everything gets to much so people start crying, throwing things, shouting. Having a breakdown. I think it wouuod be interesting to capture images on what everyone has been through.

For my next shoot I would like to take photos of a happier side of life, in friendship. Friendship will also represent the people that are there for you when you are having a breakdown.

Research Log

Sam Haskins

Denotations: A woman looking down towards the floor.
Connotations: To me, this woman looks like the is wearing a mask. However, the said mask in tis moment in time is cracking. She looks physically dolled up, however, her facial expressions show vulnerability. She looks lost in thought. As if she is n a predicament she can't quite escape.
I selected this photo as I like the way she is looking away from the camera and to me represents vulnerability. This could help me with my exam in taking photos for Isolation or Dismal.

Helmut Newton
